It does this by stopping the multiplication of the herpes virus. When the herpes virus gets killed it releases the substance that it is responsible for causing in the body. This substance is aciclovir in a form of injection. It is usually given by mouth. You usually take one or two tablets per day. Take it exactly as prescribed. Do not miss any doses. Do not take for more than 14 days or take a longer course of treatment. You are advised to keep taking it until you have passed the maximum duration of your treatment without any later stopping it. If you stop it suddenly, it may not be effective. Stopping it too early may cause the sores to heal up and the infection to return.
